CHAPTER 38

Fiona was the first and only person who he could be authentic about his experiences with. About his past, about his trauma. He’d had to fake so much, and now he couldn’t wait to continue talking with her and took the first opportunity he had at school to meet Fiona at the library. She buzzed with nervous energy, but he prattled on about the physics class, and she tried to engage with the deliberately boring topic as they settled into the cubicle that Fiona had booked.

System secure.

The words flashed up visible to both of them

Video? Audio?

Fiona’s text as always occurred immediately.

“Yes, both,” Eric answered out loud.

Fiona’s face transformed. “You’re the reborn.” Her hands twitched like she wanted to reach out and stroke his face. “The reborn.” The wonder vanished, and she went all business, her face serious. “I pledge to help you in any way I can.” She didn’t get down on her knees, but it was close.

“I didn’t think you were that type,” he quipped, trying to subtly ward off the almost religious overtones.

Inside him, he felt Guidance stirring.

“You’ve come back in time to save humanity. How can I do anything other than help? Instead, I have put you in danger. I need to make it better.”

Guidance, metaphorically, reared up in front of him. He was a space mite being studied by the ancient Badors. Insignificant, almost beyond notice but doomed now that intellect had turned to face him.

With a gulp, he shut his eyes tight. There were sparks of colors, and he was suddenly standing in his Meditative Perfect Recall space.

“What?” he asked the room, and then text scrolled in front of his eyes.

Gather allies that can be developed to the level that they can challenge the Traclaon heroes or can help develop humanity to meet the threat.

Ally must be aware of your reborn status.
